Survivors of Suicide Support
My name is Amy Schulz, and I’m a volunteer facilitator for the Survivors of Suicide support group in Madison, Wisconsin.
Have you lost a loved one to suicide? Unfortunately I have. I lost my brother Rob to suicide in 2002. This was a traumatic event in my life. My brother had symptoms of depression and difficulty sleeping, but I never anticipated that he would end his life.
Gratefully, I found several tools to help grieve and process his complicated death. One of the organizations that helped me on this Journey was the Survivors of Suicide support group, that is sponsored by Journey Mental Health. For the last twenty years, this international Survivors of Suicide Loss Day has held a program for survivors of a suicide loss. This day of hope and healing is held worldwide to create a sense of community by connecting with others who share similar experiences.
There will be events for survivors of suicide loss in cities throughout the world, including here in Madison, on Saturday, November 23rd, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, at Journey Mental Health, 24 Kessel Court, lower level.
We know that grief can feel overwhelming, we also know suicide loss survivors who are left to grieve alone are at greater risk of suicide themselves. Attending support groups, like our survivors of suicide group, and attending a survivors of suicide loss day can be helpful in this journey towards healing.
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the place to register for this event, at afsp.org/survivorday, or call the local local survivors of suicide phone number at 608-280-2435 at Journey Mental Health.
The kiosk brings you commentaries from members of the public. All opinions expressed are those of the speakers. Have an idea for your own two-minute commentary? Go to wortfm.org/kioskcommentary.
