Big Business moves to limit local government
Matt Rothschild here with the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. Happy to be on the Insurgent Radio Kiosk, but I’m not happy about a recent report that Wisconsin Manufacturer’s and Commerce put out called “Local Out of Control. The giant lobby and huge campaign spender wants its hired hands in the legislature to pass a law to limit the ability of villages, towns, cities and counties to engage in lobbying. Essentially, in a dual with local governments, WMC which has the big guns, wants to disarm its already poorly-equipped opponents.
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce doesn’t like the fact that local governments want to curb factory farms and close the darkstore loophole and support mass transit. They and their corporate members want absolutely nothing to stand in their way of making a profit no matter the social cost. They’ve already savaged labor unions and gutted state regulations; now they’re going after the power of local officials to affect public policy. Wisconsin CEOs rank this as the top issue to pursue, in a recent WMC survey, the report said. And they’re not content to stop there. The report also assails the effort to influence state lawmakers via nonbinding referenda. Now that’s a direct attack on you as a citizen. They don’t want you to have a voice, even a nonbinding voice, in the state legislature. they want to be the only voice, or certainly the loudest voice. Their report proves one thing: Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce is an enemy of democracy. I’m Matt Rothschild, and that’s how I see it.
